Location Clues

GPS-based check-in challenges for outdoor adventures

What are Location Clues?

Location clues use GPS to verify that players have physically arrived at a specific place. Instead of typing an answer, players simply need to be at the right location to complete the clue.

Creating a Location Clue

  1. Click "Add Clue" in the hunt editor
  2. Select "Location" as the clue type
  3. Write a clue that hints at the destination
  4. Click "Set Location" to open the map
  5. Click on the map to set the target location
  6. Adjust the check-in radius (how close players must be)
  7. Configure optional hints and save

Setting the Target Location

When you click "Set Location," a map appears where you can:

  • Click to place a marker at the exact target spot
  • Drag the marker to adjust its position
  • Use search to find a specific address or landmark
  • Zoom in for precise placement

Tip: Zoom in closely to identify landmarks and place markers accurately on building entrances, monuments, or other specific features.

Check-in Radius

The radius determines how close players must be to complete the clue. The editor displays the radius in feet (5-100 ft):

  • 5-30 feet: Very precise - good for specific landmarks
  • 30-80 feet: Standard - accounts for GPS drift
  • 80-165 feet: Generous - good for general areas
  • 165-330 feet: Very generous - large landmarks or buildings

Note: GPS accuracy varies. In cities with tall buildings or dense tree cover, accuracy may be reduced. Consider using a larger radius in these areas.

Location Hints

You can enable optional hints to help players find the location:

Adventure Tier Feature: Direction hints (hot/cold feedback and distance display) are available on the Adventure pricing tier and above.

Hot/Cold Feedback

As players move around, they receive feedback like "Getting warmer!" when moving closer to the target or "Getting colder..." when moving farther away. This creates an engaging game of discovery without revealing the exact location.

Distance Display

Shows the remaining distance to the target (e.g., "150m away"). Useful for longer outdoor hunts where players need to gauge their progress.

Best Practices

  • Visit the location yourself before creating the clue to verify GPS accuracy
  • Write descriptive clues that give players enough context to find the general area
  • Consider accessibility - ensure all players can reach the location
  • Check for obstructions - buildings, fences, or private property
  • Test with multiple devices - GPS accuracy varies between phones

GPS Permissions

Players must grant location permission to their browser or app for location clues to work. If a player denies permission:

  • They won't be able to complete location clues automatically
  • Consider providing an alternative way to verify arrival (like a code posted at the location)

Indoor Locations

GPS works best outdoors. For indoor locations:

  • Use a larger radius (165-330 feet) to account for signal issues
  • Consider using a Question or Find clue instead
  • Place a physical code at the location as a backup verification method
