Clue Types
Choose the right challenge for each step of your hunt
Overview
TreasureRat offers three types of clues, each designed for different kinds of challenges:
- Question - Traditional riddles and puzzles
- Find - Physical object searches
- Location - GPS-based check-in challenges
Question Clues
Question clues are the most versatile type. Use them for:
- Riddles and brain teasers
- Trivia questions about a topic
- Puzzles with specific answers
- Observation challenges ("What color is the door?")
Players type their answer or select from multiple choices to solve the clue.
Example: "I have hands but cannot clap. What am I?" (Answer: clock)
Find Clues
Find clues direct players to locate a physical object or place. The clue text describes what to find, and the answer confirms they found it.
Great for:
- Hidden objects around a house or venue
- Landmarks during an outdoor adventure
- Items with codes or words written on them
Example: "Find the envelope hidden under the garden gnome. What word is written inside?" (Answer: adventure)
Location Clues
Location clues use GPS to verify players have reached a specific place. Instead of typing an answer, players simply arrive at the location to complete the clue.
Perfect for:
- City exploration hunts
- Hiking trail adventures
- Scavenger hunts across a campus or park

Mixing Clue Types
The best hunts often combine different clue types to create variety:
- Start with a Question riddle to get things going
- Add a Find clue to get players moving
- Use a Location clue to bring everyone to a gathering point
- Continue alternating for an engaging experience
